Hello!
My name is Rachael and I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I want to write to you to let you know how special your artwork is to me. In September 2010 I arrived back to NYC from a particularly challenging trip to India. I worked in an orphanage there during the summer, and in my time after traveling via trains through India, I saw the worst in people through greed, corruption, sadness, loss, and pure destruction in both environmental and animal abuse. Needless to say, I felt the experience to my very core. It put me in a very distraught state of mind and infinite sadness seemed to take over. I felt helpless and lost. I caught an early flight home to Brooklyn and walked into a destroyed home. I had been robbed while away, and all of my personal belongings and cherished items gone. The impact on my already saddened self was immense.
I walked outside to clear my head and being 4 am, the streets were empty. All of a sudden, In the moonlight, a happy face with large eyes and the idea of "LOVE" seemed to jump out to me. It was your art. It rushed a feeling of happiness, love, friendship, connection and pure energy into me, at a time when I needed it most. I thank you for this. It was at the right time and in the right place. I took it home and it has been on every apartment I have lived in since, front and center and always making me happy when I see it.

This has been unexpectedly a long and winding tale, but thank you again and again. I had to reach out to you and let you know how your artwork has touched me. Keep creating and LOVE.

Changchun, China & Spiritual Awakening - Organized older posts

Below you will find a series of works I did in Changchun, China. They are arranged within a small community in the order presented here, along with a few others I neglected to photograph. The first work can be seen from the street and, should the viewer decide to walk toward it, more and more works will be continually revealed as one traverses the maze of tunnels and courtyards going up and down a winding path in the center of Changchun.

Little over 100 years ago Changchun was under the control of Russia which benefited greatly from its geographical location as a hub of commerce and trade because of the crossing of many great rail systems. The Japanese took control of Changchun around the time of the Second World War, used it as their capital in China, and added to its already strong energies with their practice of feng shui at a city-wide or global scale. These features can still be seen and felt today. After the Japanese, it was soon recaptured by the Russians only to be captured yet again, but this time by the Communist Chinese. In my travels and interaction with the city's peoples, it seems that the Communist Chinese did and continue to do the most damage to both the land and the people of the area. Unlike southern China there seems to be almost open resentment of the current government both because of its present actions and it's history. Perhaps this is in part due to the fact that many who suffered at the hands of the Chinese invasion of Changchun are still alive and make up the larger part of the population. Add this to cultures that greatly respect older generations, and you have many direct stories of suffering and an understandable desire to be rid of the bureaucrats from Beijing.

It is my understanding that it is in part due to the history and the particular energies within this city that Changchun gave rise to the fastest growing and largest spiritual awakening movement that the planet has ever seen. From zero to well over three hundred million practicioners in China alone in only a few years, Falun Gong was once seen everywhere at all times of day in Changchun, the hometown of its founder. But then, in the infancy of its existance, it was swiftly outlawed and continues to be brutally persecuted by the Chinese government. What remains hard for me to imagine while walking around places like Changchun is the image of every square or open plaza being filled with people practicing modern Chi cultivation. The people remain, but now they walk about the parks as if nothing happened. But in private, and especially in Changcun, QiGong continues to be practiced, a revolution is still going on, and it began from within.

My goal is to add to public space in what little way I can. To reinforce positive emotions within all vieweres and to question negative schemas when possible. To develop and cultivate a light within which will be strong enough to help others kindle and grow their own fires.

I had the above dream while lying in a fever suffering from air pollution. I find that such states provoke the most vivid visions of places and peoples from distant lands and perhaps times. However, in dreams where I float in space unto myself I am usually healing and do not travel or see anything much out of the ordnairy unless others intefere. The tentacle-like bed of fingers or seaweed was the interferance of another and startled me awake.

I have come to understand that our potential is sleeping while our primitive side narrates humanity's story and it isn't hard to see the cyclical nature of where we're headed, or, as Oppenheimer hinted at, where we've been. Our internal and external narratives are spelled out for us in symbols. But in this day and age it seems difficult to take the time to call them by their names.

Dr. Carl Jung made widely available the fact that we see glimpses of our potential in dreams.

I find it's always so interesting to see the end result of paintings done in the pitch black of night where the wall appears solid black and even white becomes nearly impossible to distinguish in the darkness.

The concept of "holding office" is traditionally represented in this way. The idea itself I'm still trying to grasp at. Apparently, it's almost as ancient as it is complex. Both the horse and the hairstyle denote a person who "holds office."

Painting a person who holds office in this way with a halo in China indicates both a love of ancient Chinese culture (somewhat illegal) and a distaste for current government officials and corruption (highly illegal). This, to all people who passed was a highly enjoyable but very provocative work.

If painting religious iconography was not inflamatory enough in a land where any dissent concerning government practices is highly illegal, certainly this was enough to be the icing on the cake.

But did I stop there? Of course not!

And then we come to the frog in the well.

Without a doubt, if a person had seen the other pieces in the correct order and continued along the maze of buildings following all my works (many undocumented), this piece would strike directly home in the soul of this land. I call out to the earth and beg forgiveness. With these works I am clearly defining what is good and what is bad, but I am leaving it up to the individual to make their own distinction. Hopefully there are particular icons and symbols which will illucidate a more exact meaning, if not enlighten directly. But it will be up to each person's higher-self, unconscious mind, greater thinking, to define what aspects of their world are being highlighted here.

So what might this painting mean to a Chinese?

There is a great story in China, like so many others, and this story is about a frog in a well. He sits there in his well and thinks the sky he sees is everything that there is. One day Turtle comes along and attempts to tell Frog of the world outside the well. Frog refuses to listen, he says he already knows everything and all that there is to see can be seen by him. Then Bird comes and tells him of the sea and the wonders of the sky! Again, Frog says there is only the sky which he can see from the bottom of his well. Bird, like the other animals, must be lying. Eventually, all the animals gather together and convince him to come out and have a look for himself. When he finally comes out he sees a world beyond compare, beautiful as the dawn. He eventually regrets the way he once was and the life he wasted while denying reality.

This is a painting of a dream I had where many of the wells were burning and there were so many that they looked like stars as they faded into the distance. I painted an approximation of my dream, anything like the dream itself would take longer than this one short life to paint, much less when done hurridly in the middle of the night. A few local guys stopped for a chat after basketball and really loved my work. And as an added bonus they told me that when people dream of fire it is a sign that they will be very wealthy. Well, I don't know about that, I'm already wealthy in all the ways that matter most, but here's to them anyway, cheers!

And then we have these last few pieces. And what I want to say is that when all is said and done, all I'm wishing upon others is a bit of peace, love, and enjoyment in this world. That's the whole point after all, isn't it?

Berlin Culture & Some type of Art Culture

I have respect for this guy's style. I don't know him personally, but we've met a few times in passing. And generally I like some of the artists who are featured in his gallery, and sometimes I like their work too. At one point he seems to discount the perception of Berlin as an art capital of the world, citing the fact that many people are just bumming around going to parties while saying that they're artist. I feel that, in a sense, "artist" (in Western culture) denotes a lifestyle, and laying claim to such a title seems natural in a culture that commodifies lifestyles.

I would just like to add to that something I feel he would agree with. New York in the late 70's and early 80's (perhaps back to the 50's even?) was similar in that many young people, also bumming around, would claim to be artists. Now if I ask myself "why is this?" I find that both cultures as city-spaces enabled people to live cheaply, and when humans have the ability to take care of their basic concerns (food, water, shelter, community life, etc) and have time to spare, their natural ability to do great works - in whatever field attracts them - will manifest itself.

Today, Berlin is one of the cheapest capitals to live in and the city is home to the most Nobel Prize winners (or it was a year or two ago). So, I conclude that it is the "art capital" of the world. And like New York, if you actually live through that time, that little renaissance of art, you are able to see it for what it is and it is often nothing special to one endowed with eyes that see. Only in hindsight does history seek so blindly to glorify itself. It is my feeling that Berlin will be remembered, although briefly, as the art capital of the world. Now, when you realize that "art capital of the world" may only mean "city with the most kids with free time bumming around" what then? What does that say about humanity and our history? Personally, I find it a bit funny - if not sad - and totally in keeping with the rest of this bizarre planet's inhabitants' attitudes. But when I ask myself, "What does that say about art today?" Well, I know that I'm not going to answer that here and I'm not going to find the essence of everything that is wrapped up and bogged down under the crushing weight of concrete and coal-powered lights. But, I may very well find a beautiful human response to a world out of balance.

Now, as I write this, I sit and imagine a world in which everyone has time to devote themselves to greater means of expression. A world where energy is free and clean and basic needs are met for everyone. Then we will start to see great art and, in a sense, what we are truly capable of.

I had this first dream while lying in a fever as I was suffering from the air pollution. My astral body floated in space as it usually does when I'm healing myself in sleep. But this time I was awoken by something like a sea of finger-like tentacles which moved and pulsed in waves as might something like seaweed as it drifts in the great currents of an ocean. When I came in contact with this ground plane I awoke with a start. I found it was actually someone checking on me and touching my back. This interrupted my state and I was unable to relax for some hours and then sleep was prohibited by the rising of the sun which occurred at 4 or so in the morning.

In closing I'll just say a little of the feeling that was revealed to me from this experience of the other worlds.

Our potential is sleeping while our primitive side narrates humanity's story and it isn't hard to see the cyclical nature of where we're headed, or, as Oppenheimer hinted at, where we've been. The opposite wall depicts a shortened version of this, the story of humanity.

I Love it the Most! I Win!

So, I go around and try to get people taking pictures of me licking and hugging spaces and places that we consider holy in an attempt to cause others to take up a bit of self-reflection.

It can be a dangerous business, getting other people to think. I find that humanity often equates beautiful ideas like holy, divine, sacred with the need to use or show force. I often find men with guns quick to respond to any behavior outside of the ordinary in places like this. Hell, even holding a camera outside Mao's tomb can get you spirited away to another world. In fact, I would imagine that most do not know that Chairman Mao's corpse lies intact without showing signs of decomposition or age in a temple in the middle of Tianamen square. Simple words do not do that sort of weirdness justice.

I found this space when I was exploring abandoned factories in Beijing.

Like the shamans who tried to heal by painting under me, I paint on these walls my own numinous symbols discovered in the land of the dreaming. The numinosity, or magical power, of our symbols transcends time and space.

Golden rain can be seen throughout history as the means by which the gods heal the land. Think of rainfall and a plentiful harvest as a conscious interpretation of the metaphor. Also, think back to the emaculate conception of Mary with Jesus, often represented by golden rain from the heavens. Further back brings us to the emaculate conception of the Greek Danae, impregnated by Zeus, also depicted as golden rainfall. Further back we go to Egypt with Isis, if you know that story, and the stories go on across cultures and time.

Modernity has not lost its connection with nature, but I feel we have forgotten how to perceive this connection which is ever active, constantly illuminating the Way, because the story goes on and on.

In an ambiguiously vain attempt at healing the land I trace my dreams onto the surface of wood and stone as I roll across the land, never knowing where I am or where I'm going as I learn to let go of the bank and float down the great river. Above me, a presence sits atop an eight spoked wagon wheel and I, presumptious as a child or an uninvited guest, seek to explain the unkown to the teachers I meet along the Way. As quiet as a foreigner.

Don't paint, talk, or try to even think about mandalas in China, it can be seen as religious and their prisons aren't good places to be.

But, if you're like me you'll do it anyway. Some things are more important than following the rules :)

Beijing - 798 (and Sakristan too!)

798 is an area of Beijing that used to be entirely composed of working factories. At some point the factories stopped factoring and artists began to take over the space using the old abandoned buildings as studios and eventually as galleries. Today the main features are the art galleries and souveneir shops. It's become pretty gentrified, I'd read about that online, but assumed the writers were exagerating a bit. They kind of weren't. It's unique gentrification and that might be worth seeing in its own right. And it was here that I came across the first (and only) bit of streetart in Beijing (or in all of China thus far) other than my own and other than the (very rare) tag or bomb.

This is a work of mine next to a Sakristan piece. Perhaps it's like a left/right brain switch, here the left is the more conscious side of man and the right is the less tech savy unconscious element encountered most readily in dream life.

I imagine it was the same for him when he painted here, crowds of tourists surrounded me taking pictures, none of them uttering a word, just me, smiling and attempting to say hello, making them blush and turn away, sometimes running away in giggles. Funny enough I've put up some work(s?) by Sakristan in the US, and we know some of the same people. Anyway, small world, no?

A mural done for the Atlanta Beltline which is an attempt at making Atlanta a more human-friendly environment. Currently it is a city designed more for the car.

In Europe (or, for that matter, in South America), urban growth and excess of motorized traffic have not so far resulted in completely subverting the pleasures of walking. A city of four million like Paris is still holding out the promise of civilized Lebensraum. With the way things are in some schools today, I'd rather be back in prison than back in school.

I taught for a time because I was asked to, and also because I was saddened by the mentally ruinous factory processes mere children were being subjected to daily. Perhaps I offered some hope during the brief time I was there. Obviously, I was not there for long as the very survival of modern educative systems, and contemporary society, depends on conformity which in turn depends on stupidity or fear.

I have problems forcing those things upon children.

Most systems of schooling I have encountered reduce humans into small parts of a grand industrial mechanization which breeds fear and violence. Thus, it is my belief that future generations (should humanity's future be in the direction of progress) will look upon current social systems of organization as barbaric and morally bankrupt. Nonetheless, the participants will be excused and forgiven with the same kind of rational we use to forgive most participants in crimes against humanity. Something like, "They didn't have a choice" or "They had to do it" or "It was the way things were back then." That the participants were driven by fear generated by a society of production and consumption will probably be too many words and syllables for most people to think about even a few hundred years from now.

I suppose the talking machines (Radio, TV, etc) will probably still exist in some way or another. As I close I wonder what's worse; the perpetuation of the myth of freedom in the minds of our young, or the incessant jabbering, flag waving, and enemy killing done by adults which protects the myth by destroying the ideal?

On a lighter note, although being around the prison-like buildings and the teachers was mentally and spiritually exhausting, often children would tell me things like; "This is the best day of my life!" or "This is the best day ever" and so on. And many of the children were so intelligent (although considered problematic by the wardens) that they were not to be bent by the system. So there's hope yet Mister Frodo.

I did this mural for a school. The animals are all endangered and if we continue with many of our ways of being without alteration it could come to pass that, by the time the children are adults, the animals will no longer exist in this world. So, much like cave paintings, I was thinking about those in Lascaux, this painting may serve as a reminder of what once was and will never be again.

That evening began after a full day running around Manhattan, far too many drinks in Prospect Park, and a grueling 2 hour train ride in the intense heat of NY's metro system just to go from one point in Brooklyn to another. When the sun began to rise I didn't have the strength to hang around any longer just for daylight photos. One of these days I'll find another photographer to follow me around and document some of these happenings. Until that time, many thanks to those that do grab images of my work for me, without which I would often have no records for myself beyond what memory will keep.

Past couple days have been dumping a lot of older works I made onto the streets. Here are a few examples from a period where I was searching for a different direction. It lasted a few months, I don't know how much junk I ended up making in search of a different language of expression. This is but one outward expression of an inner dialogue which I feel it's better to put on display in the streets than to simply consign to some trash bin.

Put up a lot of these the other evening. I suppose I will only post these three, however, in total I suppose I put up somewhere between 30-50 of them & gave some to people in the streets who gave me beer & wouldn't stop laughing at the things. Some older Berlin graffiti writers came along and helped me put up a few. It was great except I drank so much and had to keep finding places to pee. jaja
